REFLECTION ON THE LEGACY OF

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR

From the front page:

Good evening on this day celebrating the amazing legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr was not just an extraordinary civil rights leader but also an incredible spiritual teacher. His teachings about love, racial justice and nonviolence are teachings…

…that have inspired me in my work both personally and in learning how to be a teacher. I wrote a post* this past week exploring the issues of what it means to be able to love with a kind of passion that includes knowing when to say no.

Martin Luther King Jr. embodied that capacity in a way that I can only aspire to.

He loved unabashedly.

And in that love he refused to “surrender to circumstances”. He refused to settle for less than the fullness of love that he felt personally and that he preached to the broader society.

My hope is that the work we do here at Students of the Dream contributes in some small way to this legacy that Martin Luther King Jr gave to us.

It is why we write about love and defiance.

It is why this work is a life and spiritual practice for us. It is also why we will join tens of thousands of others in Washington DC next weekend for the Women’s March on Washington.

All that we do, we do as best we know how, from a place of love.

On an inner level we practice trusting that there is a deeper love for each and everyone of us. In the world we try as best we know how, to bring that inner love to bear on all our relationships.

We call ourselves “students of the dream” because we know better, than to think that we have this all figured out.

We don’t.

Yet in that acceptance of not knowing, we can also keep our intention strong.

We can choose to live what Martin Luther King Jr taught us in so many ways – to go beyond our life circumstances and to live in deeper love.

I would like to close with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr:

“…he’s allowed me to go to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the promised land! I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land.”

With Love and Respect,

Bill and Sue
